Filipa Oliveira + Miguel Amado present “On the Table”, a commissioned project for the Curators’ Desk section at Just Madrid Art Fair. This Project is inspried in the thought of Bertrand Russel who stated that “In order to know anything at all about the table, we must know truths connecting it with things with which we have acquaintance”. “On the Table” means that if an idea has been put forward, it has been made available for public debate. Being the “table” an object, “on the” suggests the symbolic dimensions that have always been associated to it, which include eating and drinking, working, and talking. These functions are emphasized by Russell and encapsulate the curators’ proposal.
“On the Table” consists of a series of daily conversations by invited curators and artists as well as a series of “lecture-performances” delivered by artists selected from an international open-call. Transforming itself into a meeting hub for the discussion of present-day themes, this project involves agents and visitors in a critical platform that evokes the worldview of radical transformative artistic and political pedagogies.
The schedule of curators talks will be:
Thursday, 18th Feb. at 5pm – Filipa Oliveira + Noé Sendas
Friday, 19th Feb at 5pm - Blanca de la Torre + Avelino Sala
Saturday, 20th Feb at 5pm - Tania Pardo + Antonio Ballester Moreno
Sunday, 21st Feb. at 3pm - Virginia Torrente + Marlon de Azambuja
Filipa Oliveira + Miguel Amado are a Portuguese curatorial team founded in 2004. They have organized different solo shows series in Lisbon with emerging artists, designers and architects, including the program of the non-profit organization Espaço AC and of two project rooms at Carlos Carvalho Gallery. In 2009, they curated “If You Don’t Know What the South Is It’s Simply Because You Are From the North” as part of “No Soul for Sale: A Festival of Independents” at the X Initiative in New York, and “Impossible Exchange” commissioned for Frieze Projects at Frieze Art Fair in London. With these projects, they have shifted their focus from the traditional exhibition format to critically engaging, discursive-, process- and participatory-based events that examine the relation of aesthetics and ethics within contemporary art. Parallel to their joint practice, they both work individually as curators and critics in Portugal and internationally.
